The direction of airflow determines where the overspray goes, how much dust reaches the part, and how much the painter is exposed to paint mist. Below, we explain how each airflow works, its advantages, limitations, and who it makes the most sense for.

Why does airflow define cabin quality?

Every booth does two things at the same time: it blows in clean air and exhausts air containing paint mist. The path between the inlet and the outlet determines the outcome.

Finish: If the air carries the overspray over the already painted part, particles and dirt appear on the surface.

Operator safety: If the painter stands between the piece and the exhaust fumes, the mist passes through his breathing zone.

Cost: More vertical flows require a plenum in the ceiling, pit, or elevated base, and more filtration. This increases investment and construction costs.

To understand the basic structure of air intake, filtration, and exhaust, see How does a paint booth work?.

Cross draft: horizontal flow

In a cross-draft cabin, air enters from the front, usually through doors with filters, and runs parallel to the floor to the back wall, where the exhaust filters are located.

Advantages:

Lowest investment among the four types.

Simple installation, no pit and no ceiling plenum required.

Easy maintenance, with filters concentrated on a single wall.

Limits:

Air passes through the entire piece before exiting. Overspray from the front may settle on areas already painted in the background.

Dust from the floor and entrance tends to be carried throughout the cabin.

The painter needs to position himself carefully so as not to get caught between the piece and exhaustion.

Recommended for: Industrial parts, furniture, components, and projects where a Class A finish is not a priority.

Side draft: downward lateral flow

In a side draft cabin, also called a side down draft cabin, air enters through the ceiling and descends to the lower part of the side walls, where the exhaust points are located. The air passes through the unit from top to bottom and exits on both sides.

Advantages:

More uniform flow along the piece than in cross-drafting.

The overspray is pulled downwards and to the sides, away from the painted surface.

There's no need for a pit in the floor, which simplifies construction.

Limits:

The walls are made thicker because of the exhaust ducts, which takes up space.

The cost is higher than that of a cross-draft.

Recommended for: Long pieces of equipment and large vehicles, such as buses, trucks, agricultural machinery and implements, can be used when it is not possible to dig a well.

Semi down draft: diagonal flow

A semi-down draft booth is a middle ground between cross-draft and down-draft. Air enters through a plenum in the ceiling, usually at the front, and exits through the lower part of the back wall. The result is a diagonal flow that descends over the part before proceeding to the exhaust.

Advantages:

Cleaner air over the part than in cross draft, with less dust on the paint.

It does not require a pit in the floor, which reduces construction costs.

A good balance between investment and quality of finish.

Limits:

The spray continues to travel along the piece towards the bottom. Some of the overspray may pass over areas that have already been painted.

Contamination control is lower than in a full downdraft.

Recommended for: Automotive refinishing workshops and manufacturers who want to raise the level of finish without the cost of a pit.

Down draft: total downward flow

In a down-draft cabin, air enters through the entire ceiling, passes through supply filters, and descends vertically to the floor. The exhaust is located on the floor, through grilles above a pit or an elevated base. Gravity helps: the overspray falls directly into the exhaust, without passing over other parts of the unit.

Advantages:

Best control of overspray and contamination among the four types.

Uniform airflow throughout the entire piece, including the sides and bottom.

The mist is pulled away from the painter's breathing zone.

High-quality finish, with less polishing rework.

Limits:

Greater investment.

Requires a pit in the floor or an elevated base with a ramp.

More filters, which increases maintenance costs.

Recommended for: High-end automotive refinishing, for automakers, aviation, and any process where the finish is the key differentiator.

Comparison between the four airflows

<colgroup>
<col />
<col />
<col />
<col />
<col />
<col /></colgroup>

Type

Air intake

Air outlet

Overspray control

Civil works

Investment

Cross draft

Front (doors)

back wall

Basic

Simple

Minor

Side draft

Roof

Sides, in the lower part

Good

No well; walls with ducts

Average

Semi-down draft

Roof, at the front

Bottom, at the bottom

Good

No well

Average

Down draft

entire ceiling

Floor (pit or elevated base)

Excellent

Well or elevated base

Bigger

How to choose the right workflow for your process.

Before deciding, answer these five questions:

What level of finish does your client require? Premium repainting and automakers often request down drafting. Industrial parts and furniture usually work well with cross drafting or semi down drafting.

What is the size and shape of the piece? Long and tall vehicles, such as buses and trucks, benefit from side drafting or down drafting.

Is it possible to renovate the floor? If digging a well isn't possible, the options are side draft, semi down draft, or down draft with an elevated base.

What is the production volume? The more parts produced per day, the greater the rework burden, and the more the investment in a vertical workflow pays off.

What is the total budget? Consider the purchase, installation, and maintenance of filters, not just the price of the cabin.

Airflow also interacts with the internal pressure of the cabin. To understand this part, read [link/reference]. Positive cabin or negative cabin: which to choose?.

Conclusion: the right flow depends on your process.

There is no single best workflow for everyone. Cross-drafting works well for cost-focused processes. Side-drafting and semi-down-drafting balance investment and finishing. Down-drafting is the choice when finishing is the key differentiator for the business.

Koria designs booths for automotive refinishing, the furniture industry, and industrial lines, with airflow tailored to each application.
